A U bolt is a piece of metal shaped into a U with threads on each end over which a piece of metal with holes is placed and then secured with bolts.
Obviously, you should choose a U bolt that is manufactured to a high standard that is capable of coping with the demands on board a vessel both from the impact that the elements of the weather can have on the bolt as well as what it is being used for.
Although you can buy the likes of galvanized steel U bolts it should come as no surprise to read that when it comes to using a U bolt that is open to the elements that it is preferable to use a stainless steel U bolt. This will prevent it from rusting that so easily and quickly happens when subject to salt water.
U bolts are typically used on sailing boats with one use being as a safe means to secure the eye of the main sale, spinnaker or genoa to the sheet or halyard and then raise the sail into the required position. This way of doing things is preferable than just threading the sheet or halyard directly through the eye of the sail. U bolts can be manufactured in an oval shape or in a square shape – it is very much down to your own personal preference as to which design you choose as both provide a secure form of attachment. The size of a U bolt can range from a couple of centimetres to several centimetres with the thickness of the metal also varying when used on a sailing boat depending upon what it is to be used for and its load bearing requirement.
